Birmingham

Back to region content

Birmingham, in the county of West Midlands, is the second largest city in England and being at the centre of the Heart of England makes it an excellent base for touring through this varied and exciting region.

The city of Birmingham has much to offer the visitor many diverse activities that are guaranteed to impress whatever age or budget. The jewellery quarter has unique shops and museums with the “Balti Triangle” a favourite of those who hanker after Asian culture. Other top attractions of Birmingham include Cadbury World and the Sea Life Centre. Birmingham’s science museum, otherwise known as Thinktank, is a friendly family orientated centre combining science and entertainment in spectacular fashion.

Birmingham has excellent transport links and the road network makes it easy to access nearby attractions such as the Shakespeare country of Stratford upon Avon in Warwickshire. Waterways have always featured large in Birmingham’s history and the canal area in the city centre has been transformed over recent years into an attractive centre for relaxing. The network of canals around the city makes it ideal as a boating centre and what could be better than meandering through the delightful countryside of Worcestershire, or stopping overnight at a canal side pub in Staffordshire, just the way the water boatmen used to?

Because Birmingham is so central to the Heart of England region it is possible, by using the excellent road connections, to visit nearby attractions in Shropshire; for instance the famous town of Ironbridge set in the beautiful Severn Valley, or medieval Bridgnorth, perched dramatically on a cliff overlooking the River Severn. Also en-route in your motoring tour, you should experience the Herefordshire cider route. This takes you around all the cider producers in the county; perhaps a good idea would be to hire a bike for this wonderful tour!

Birmingham is not, as many mistakenly believe, a vast built up city. There are numerous parks and gardens and the most famous has to be the botanical gardens. Here you will find fifteen acres of beautiful gardens with the finest collection of plants in the Midlands. The glasshouses contain a range of exotic flora, with aviaries, plant shops, and refreshments, an adventure playground and children’s discovery garden making it an ideal day out for all.
